German Style Milk Rice

One of my favorite sweet dishes as a kid was grandmas milk rice. We used to have this as a sweet lunch during the week after school. Now as an adult I still like it as a comfy dessert for the cold time of the year…

For 4 portions as dessert or 2 portions as lunch:

  • 1 cup Arborio / Risotto Rice
  • 3 cups of milk (Whole or 2%)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (whole cinnamon)
  • 2 Tbsp. Sugar
  • 1/2 fresh squeezed lemon juice
  •  Grated peel of 1/2 a lemon
  • 1 Tbsp. butter (unsalted)
  • Ground Cinnamon for decoration

Heat up the milk with the cinnamon stick with the lemon peel and the sugar. When it starts bubbling add the rice and let it cook slowly for around 25 min on low heat. Stir every 5 minutes and make sure nothing sticks to the bottom of the pan. At the lemon juice and the butter at the end of the cooking time. Serve with some lemon zest and ground cinnamon sprinkled on top.

Tipp: It is also delicious when cooked with raisins or cranberries.
