South-East-Asia Part 1 – Kuala Lumpur

I already posted a few recipes I experienced during my Asia trip… In 2013 I went on a 4 week trip trough South-East Asia (Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand). The first stop was Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. A modern and interesting capitol with almost 2 million residents.  Kuala Lumpur means “muddy confluence” thanks to the two river who joined together in the city. Garden city of the lights is probably the appropriate nickname thanks to modern architecture and astonishing shopping center.

I stayed in an amazing hotel on the other street side of the PETRONAS Twin Towers. The five star hotel Maya is a great place to explore the city and start a vacation with some relaxing moments. Nice rooms, great breakfast and an amazing spa sweetened my stay. The outside seating area of the bar allows an astonishing view on the cities famous landmark.

Kuala Lumpur is definitely known for modern shipping malls. Due to the high temperatures and humidity all shops are located indoors in nicely temperatured malls. One is located underneath the PETRONAS Twin Towers, the Suria KLCC. International brands and local favorites will give an amazing shopping experience. And it is cheap! Overall my experience showed it is 25% cheaper than i am used to from American shopping malls or European stores.

Petronas Towers

The twins where from 1998 to 2004 the highest buildings in the world. Now with the 452 m (1483 feet) the towers are holding still the 8th place and #1 highest twin tower.  With 88 floors the view from the observation deck and the Skybridge is amazing and worth the 85 MYR (20 Dollar). Please be aware that the tower observation center is closed on Mondays!

The visitor area of the PETRONAS Twin Towers allows a beautiful view over the city to the outskirts of the 1.7 Million resident metropolis.

After a lot of shopping, sightseeing and walking my last cultural stop was the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park which is the world largest aviary bird park. It is a great place to take a deep breath from the city life. As in any Asian city the air pollution is an issue and this bird park gives a little relief to dust, noise pollution and exhaust gases.

The city is an architectural wonder in a raising city… follow me to see how food influenced this city.
