A Monday night, me alone on the road, gracing for Mexican food… why not give it a try. This restaurant is nicely located in west Des Moines close to the West Glen Town Center and just off I 35.
A good wine menu, nice house cocktails and handcrafted margaritas. Sounds like a great spot for a fun date night start. But does the food keep up with that?
I actually had no drunk tonight so I just can assume the cocktails are as good as they looked at my neighbors table. But for sure I had some food. Guacamole, chicken fajitas and churros with chocolate sauce as the final end.
My starter – an all time favorite!
Guacamole come either in the traditional execution for 7 dollar or Iowa style with corn and bacon for 9 dollar. To be honest I am not impressed. To much tomatoes and not enough spice. And the missing spice seems to be the common motto of this restaurant. The chips were warm and housemade which is nice.
Lets get the main dish- sizzling hot!
I had Chicken Fajitas. A hot plate with chicken, onions and bell pepper. Served with pico the gallo, sour cream and corn tortillas. It is nicely presented but it leaked on flavor. I like chicken fajitas and eat them quite a bit. And to be honest. The ones I had last week at the local chilies from the lunch menu was way better. Yeah I am disappointed for my 17 dollar dish.
The pico the gallo is way to plain and tasted like canned tomatoes. A pico de gallo contains fresh cut tomatoes, onions, cilantro and spices to be worth the name. This one tasted like fire roasted canned tomatoes. No green leave. No visible onion or freshness.
My 4 tortillas served I aluminum foil and a nice warmer bag was a good amount and they tasted housemade. My veggies on the other hand tasted steamed versus grilled on a hot plate.
Well as the pictures shows the chicken was not roasted enough. It leaked flavor and spices. I am yes to spicy food but this even required salt which I do not like from an restaurant. I had to spice up my guacamole and my main dish. This is not typical for me who fully believes the chef should know how to proper season. So since this was disappointing I need to get my hops up and order me some dessert.
The final – back Spain 🇪🇸
Churros with chocolate… oh this reminds me at my Madrid trip to see one of my best friends Dori who lived there at that time. We had an amazing time and almost as good churros. This churros don’t look very original and due to the thicker size are not as crispy. I believe it’s a different style dough. Nicely powdered in cinnamon, cocoa sugar and drizzled with dulce de leche sauce. The chocolate is thick and probably and 85% chocolate blend but I am missing the promised Mexican spices.
What’s the positive here? Yes had a really nice server (Lucas) and it was very quick service. Well it is Monday and also not very busy.
Overall I would come back for a cocktail but I am not impressed with the food I got served. It had not the perfect flavor profile I am looking for. But it is a modern Mexican date night spot and the style is right my alley. I would give it a 3 out of 5.
